Mary Shapiro – Managing Director | Evoke Law, PC
Mary Shapiro is an intellectual property attorney who has extensive experience in trademark, copyright and internet matters including: selection, clearance, prosecution, registration, maintenance, enforcement, administrative proceedings, dispute resolution, licensing, and international registration and prosecution. In 2009, Mary left the private practice of Townsend & Townsend & Crew LLP to found her own firm, Mary L. Shapiro Law, PC—newly rebranded as Evoke Law, PC.
Her cannabis practice started in 2007 with Ed Rosenthal, but began in earnest when Ed introduced her to Harborside, SPARC and Peace in Medicine. She has since federally registered their respective marks, though none for cannabis products, due to the federal prohibition. She represent dispensaries, topical manufacturers, edible companies, growers, food supplement providers, internet-based companies, and a variety of cannabis startups.
A founding board member of the National Cannabis Bar Association (NCBA) and a First Fifty Sponsor of Women Grow, Mary provides pro bono assistance to Marijuana Policy Project and Americans for Safe Access. She is also advocating to persuade the California Secretary of State to permit registration of cannabis marks. In addition, she is researching and writing on cannabis trademark issues, including such topics trademarking strain names and prosecuting cannabis applications against the backdrop of marks in other regulated industries.
